Maribor also has its city fortress, its city walls. These walls served to defend the city from enemies. They were built in the 13th century, between 1255 and 1275. The walls of Maribor consist of four walls each 500 m long and are located on an area of 25 hectares. The height of the walls is different, from six to nine meters, and their thickness is up to 1m. These walls were built in the 13th century without the watchtowers that were added in the 14th century.
In the past, the entire center of Maribor was surrounded by such ramparts, and the city was then the main trading stronghold towards the Adriatic. Today we have the remains of this strong past and almost indestructible fortress.
