One of the important squares in Maribor is Liberty Square. The National Liberation monument is located on this square, and the locals call it Kodžak. Here you can enjoy a walk, and you can also sit down in a cafe. City events that should not be missed are often organized on the square, such as fairs, various gatherings, plays, music concerts, parties. We can actually say that the square is always alive. Next to the square is the Maribor Castle, and below the square you can visit the oldest wine cellar in Europe called Vinak. To the north of the square there is a view of the General Maistre square, as well as the city hill, known as a picnic area, called the Pyramid.
Besides being bordered by Maistra square, the building where the oldest vines are located and the city castle, it is also surrounded by newer buildings. The square was created in the 19th century. In its place was a walled ditch that was filled in and thus the square was built. On this square, Franz Joseph I marched and was received on this square when he came to Maribor, and it was from this square that General Maistro greeted his troops. In 1975, a monument to the liberators was erected here, it is called Kodžak and it is the work of the sculptor Slavac Tihec
