Sights of Maribor

Maribor is a city with late renaissance architecture that was restored in baroque style when the best Italian architects once built churches, building facades, courtyards, staircases, palaces, buildings that can be seen here today. The Vetrinje Palace

The Vetrinje Palace

Vetrinjski dvor is mentioned as one of the first civil houses in Maribor, around 1222. According to some claims, it is considered to be from the 14th century. It was built in the late Baroque style, and it attracts attention with its appearance already at first glance. The court is located in a beautiful location, at the beginning of Vetrinjska street, under Grajsko trg, in the very center of the city across from the Maribor castle. Until 1709, it belonged to the Vetrinje monastery, while another part was added to the city walls in the ownership of the Breuner count family. The graves of the Breuner and Rabatta families are located here.

The Maribor's Island

Maribor Island or Maribor Island in Slovenian is a natural river island and a beautiful place to spend your time walking and exploring nature. It is located on the Drava River, in the immediate vicinity of the city. The value of the island is significant and it was protected as a natural heritage in 1951, and as a cultural monument in 1992. Exceptional flora and fauna make the island interesting to visit. The island is home to various animal species, including a large number of birds. More precisely, 75 species of birds live on the island. There are also 15 types of trees and 20 types of bushes. A scenic path leads to the island, along the left bank of the Drava River.

The City Walls

The City Walls

Maribor also has its city fortress, its city walls. These walls served to defend the city from enemies. They were built in the 13th century, between 1255 and 1275. The walls of Maribor consist of four walls each 500 m long and are located on an area of 25 hectares. The height of the walls is different, from six to nine meters, and their thickness is up to 1m. These walls were built in the 13th century without the watchtowers that were added in the 14th century.

The General Maister Square

The General Maister Square

General Maistra Square is a meeting place, monuments and a wonderful view of the Neo-Renaissance building of the First Gymnasium. This is one of the larger squares in Maribor, which changed its name a couple of times during its history. During the Austro-Hungarian rule, this square was called Tegetthoff Square. Later, during the rule of Yugoslavia, it was called Jugoslovenski al i Leninov trg. The land on which the square is located belonged to Count Bandis in the 19th century.

The Slomškov Square

The Slomškov Square

Slomškov Square - One of the most beautiful squares in Maribor is located in the western part of the city, Slomškov Square. On this square there is a cathedral where the grave of the first Slovenian saint is located and a bell tower that is 57 meters high and offers a wonderful view of the city. The historical buildings surrounding the square are the Rector's building of Maribor University, the Slovenian National Theater and the main building of the Maribor Post Office. The square was named after bishop Martin Slomsek, whose statue is located in the park on the square. This square was called Kirhemplatz after the church of St. John the Baptist, which is located there, then Table Square, and since 1919 it has had its current name.
