The Maribor Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is also known as the Maribor Cathedral. It is one of the most important religious buildings in Maribor. This cathedral is Roman Catholic and is the seat of the Maribor archdiocese. It was built in the early 12th century, the cathedral was built in a romantic style. At the time when the Gothic buildings were being built, the cathedral got its current vault, and the two chapels (of St. Francis Xavier and the Holy Cross) were built during the Baroque era. It can be said that different styles of construction from different eras can be seen at this cathedral.

The bell tower of the cathedral was built in the 18th century and is 57 meters high. There used to be a bell tower built in 1623, which was destroyed by lightning.

Painted in the 18th century, the church contains scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist that are gilded. In the cathedral, it is possible to see the bishop's chair from 1890, as well as the tomb of the Maribor bishops. In the main altar is the grave of Bishop Slomšenka, who is responsible for the fact that the seat of the diocese was transferred to Maribor. The grave of the first Maribor saint is located in the cathedral.
