The town square will convey a pleasant atmosphere to you, and the buildings surrounding it make it attractive and unique. The square represents the junction of 4 important Streets. A combination of history, significant buildings, open bars and meetings. A lively place, in the heart of the old town, with a baroque statue makes the square very beautiful, and it is an unmissable place for local residents, especially during sunny days. This medieval square was named after the castle in front of which it is located. The castle was built by King Frederick III. The square was called Florian Square at the end of the 17th century.
In the 18th century, he received a monument in honor of St. Florian. Saint Florian was the patron saint of fire, water and fire natural disasters. It is believed that the monument serves to protect the city from fires, which were remembered as the greatest danger in the past. The monument symbolizes the memory of the time when the inhabitants of Maribor faced fires during the past centuries.
Also, what is interesting about this square is that there used to be a bakery of the Scherbau family, known for the fact that during the installation of electricity in 1896, 36 light bulbs burned out in the bakery. There was a Scherbaum mill in the next street. The bakery was converted into a printing house in 1937, but the printing house was moved to a new building a little later.
Today, the square has a pastry shop and a shop that has the spirit of a bakery. And the house of the Scherbaum family became a city savings bank. The place is also known as a pre-match gathering of football fans when there are important matches in Maribor. On the square and in the surrounding area there are restaurants and cafes, ideal for a meal or a drink, especially on sunny days.
