When you look at the Madrid History Museum, it is not known whether it is more beautiful and richer on the outside or inside. The red baroque building used to be the San Fernando Hospital. Maybe the building "looks" better as a museum than a hospital. It is another in a series of more visited museums in Madrid, located on the Calle de Fuencarral in the city center. It was opened in 1929, but under the name Museo Municpal, i.e. the Municipal Museum, and in 2007 it was given the name it bears today. The building in which it is located was built in 1673, and is the work of the Spanish architect Pedro de Ribera. At one time the museum was closed, from 1955 until 1978, when it was reopened to the public.
There are over 60.000 thousand historical objects in the History Museum. Here you can see old paintings, photographs, drawings, postcards, maps, ship models, money, weapons, old fans of all sizes, old furniture, royal old furniture, masterpieces of sculpture, gold and silver cutlery, as well as the finest porcelain. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are frequent occasional exhibitions by various artists. In addition to this museum, architect Pedro de Ribera designed the Toledo Bridge and Madrid's Conde Duque military district.
In the historical museum you can see everything that may be missed in other historical museums in Madrid. There is a little of everything and anything for everyone here.
The museum houses one of the oldest models of the city of Madrid from 1830, but also paintings by great artists, such as Francisco Goya, whose masterpieces have found their place in this museum. The famous porcelain of Buen Retiro, works from old Spanish studios, such as "Gutierrez Solana", but also personal historical objects from the house of Mesonero Romanos.
The history of Madrid and Spain is introduced here. The time machine offered by the museum is really something to see, because it creates a complete picture of the city - you get a fantastic parallel between the former and current capital of Spain. Historical museums are here to show us the way of life, culture, art, creation through time, tradition and history of a city and state.
Admission to the History Museum is FREE.
