Museum of Romanticism - Transferred emotion of the artist to the work. Romanticism was popular in Europe from the end of the 17th century to the middle of the 19th century, so it left its traces in Madrid as well. In the National Museum of Romanticism, you will see various contents from the romantic period. You will experience this period exactly as it is, you will see what feelings and perceptions were in Spain in the period of Romanticism, how artists expressed themselves through art.
The museum is located in a neoclassical historic house built in 1776, in the former palace of Matallana, an aristocratic family. The museum consists of fantastic works by Goya, Alenza, Madrazo, various jewelry, collections of porcelain dolls, 15 pianos, decorative art, various collections of paintings, furniture, figures, decorations and all together makes a vivid depiction of romantic Madrid from that time. Although it is a relatively small museum, it houses over 16.000 works of art.
The museum was ceremoniously opened in 1924, and in 1962 the building was declared a cultural asset. In 2009, the museum was renovated. Within the museum there is also a magical magnolia garden, arranged in four lines. It was made in the French style from the 18th century. It is named after the magnolia, and it contains different types of trees and beautifully arranged flower beds. Certainly, what visitors here especially adore is the cafe in the garden, where you will drink great coffee and eat some homemade cake.
An elegant, splendid and romantic museum, perhaps one of the most beautiful when it comes to the interior, which tells the story of the emotions of artists, romantics, from the time when romanticism ruled.
