Plaza de Oriente square is one of the most grandiose squares in Madrid. It is surrounded by the two most important buildings in Madrid, the Royal Palace and the Royal Theater. Before the square was built on this place, there were small medieval houses, which were destroyed for the construction of the square, back in 1844. The designer of the square is the architect Narciso Pascual. During this time, Madrid was under the rule of King Jose I. Anyone who wants to visit the Royal Palace will not miss this royal square.
In the middle of the square, there is a statue of Philip IV on a horse, and it is also known for being the first statue in the world where a horse stands on its two hind legs. In addition to this statue, there are 20 more statues of Spanish kings. The statues were made of white limestone for the needs of the royal palace, but they still found their place in this square. There is a spacious green and flowery royal garden between the rows of statues, with a decorative fence and beautiful flowers and trees. The Cabo Noval Garden and the Lepanto Garden are the two gardens that are the most popular here. Gardens sometimes look like little mazes.
This green royal square is a beautiful and quiet place, perfect for a stay in nature or a walk in front of the royal palace. It is unavoidable, and is located in the center of Madrid. The Royal Palace is just 90 meters from the square, and the Almudena Cathedral is nearby.
