The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is one of the most important and most visited tourist attraction in Madrid. This magnificent building is something that surely must be seen during the stay in the capital of Spain. It is the official residence of the Spanish royal family, which does not live there, but on the outskirts of Madrid. Certainly the palace is used for certain state events. It covers an area of 135.000 m2 and has 3.418 rooms, located in Calle de Bailen street. The size of the palace is something that sets it apart from all others in Europe.

The Moorish palace, which used to stand on the site of today's one, burned down in a fire on December 24, 1734, and King Philip V gave the order to build a new one on the same site. Construction began in 1738 and lasted until 1755. King Carlos II stepped into the new palace for the first time in 1764.

The palace is open to the public, so you will have the opportunity to visit it and see the interior, which conjures up the unique royal court and testifies to the history of the former rulers. The grand staircase, the royal library, the royal pharmacy, the royal kitchen and armory, the apartments, the crown room are just some of the more significant rooms located in the palace. The interior is rich in works by famous artists. It is very nicely decorated and today has preserved the original furniture, weapons, watches, silver accessories, gold motifs, fine materials, porcelain. On the walls of impressive rooms, you can see works of art by greats such as Caravaggio, Francisco Goya, Diego Velazquez.

The palace was built in the style of Baroque and Classicism. The Sabbath Gardens are part of the palace, and near the palace are the Opera Teatro Real and Almudena Cathedral, but also the two famous squares Plaza de la Almeria and Plaza de Oriente on which there are numerous monuments. The wedding banquet of Prince Philip and Leticia Ortiz was held on May 22, 2004 in the central courtyard of the palace.
