Al Dhafra Camel Festival - if you would like to get up close and personal with a dromedary, December is the right time for camels. The Al Dhafra Camel Festival lasts an entire month of Decemmber and in between all the individual events during the festival, the camels are paraded up and down a stretch of compacted sand in the middle of the desert, nicknamed “The Million Street” and named for all the camel trading deals that take place there.
The men wave sticks and dance in traditional clothes around the camels. The parading lasts long into the evening until they retire for dinner into their camps. Next morning everybody gathers at the back of the competition area, waiting for their camels to be called by the officials. Prizes are more then generous and it is a matter of prestige to win in this contest.
