Theatre Colon

Teatro Colón is famous for its unbelievable acoustic capacities, stunning architecture, which make it one of the best opera houses in the world, together with the Scala of Milan, the Garnier of Paris and the Royal Opera House of London. Designed by Francesco Tamburini, Victor Meano and Jules Dormal, the Teatro Colón’s construction lasted over 20 years. It was opened in 1908, and some of the most important operas were performed in the venue, with the most renowned conductors, singers and dancers, including Igor Stravinsky, Daniel Barenboim (once a director of the Scala), Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, PlacÍdo Domingo and many more.

The city’s government took it upon themselves to conduct thorough renovation efforts on the building, which is why the Teatro was closed for a brief period of time. Its doors were finally opened in 2010. The building houses costume and scenography workshops, as well as the renowned Superior de Arte Institute, which once trained famous future singers and ballet dancers such as Julio Bocca and Maximiliano Guerra.

The Teatro Colón hosted some of the world’s leading orchestras’ performances, such as those by the Vienna Philharmonic, Philadelphia Philharmonic, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. Its stage saw many notable instrumental performers, such as Alfred Brendel, Paco de LucÍa, Antonio de Raco, Nelson Freire, Bruno Gelber, Friedrich Gulda, Gidon Kremer, Narciso Yepes, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman and many more.

For all the reasons listed, the Teatro Colón is the pride of Argentine culture and a true symbol of opera, dance, as well as the academic music of the whole world.
