Durmitor:

The Devil's Lake

The Devil's Lake

The Devil’s Lake or Vražje Lake is situated at 1411 meters above sea level and is part of the Durmitor National Park. Legend has it that this lake got its name (literally translated as “Devil’s Lake“) because long ago a fire-breathing red winged horse lived at the spot. Every night, the horse would emerge from the lake, mating with mares who grazed at nearby pastures, beating them afterwards so as not to carry his seed. However, one mare actually foaled the devil horse’s fruit, and the foal was called Jabučilo. From that day on, the lake was called Vražje Lake.

The lake is located in the municipality of Žabljak, and is part of the Durmitor National Park. Nearby places include the Novaković village and Fish Lake. Vražje jezero is rich in fish and is a favorite fishing spot for many.  The lake registers a depth of 11 meters at its deepest spot. The most plentiful of fish species in the lake is surely trout. The lake is also good for swimming, but, as there is no shelter from the sun around, tenting is recommended.
Vražje Lake is part of the Durmitor National Park and is most easily accessible by car, as it is 10km away from the town of Žabljak.
