Savin Kuk is located at a height of 2313 meters above sea level and is one of the most beautiful, most visited, as well as most photographed peaks of the Durmitor mountain. Even though it is not the highest peak of the mountain, this peak is part of the famous panorama over Black Lake, which the Durmitor is famous for. The panorama is definitely one of the mos reccognizable of images on postcards sent from the area.
An aerial lift takes you from the foot of the mountain almost to the peak itself, more precisely, the ascent ends at Savina Voda. The aerial lift is part of the Durmitor Ski Center, while Savin Kuk is the main skiing slope, as well as the most popular ski-piste in the country. Savin Kuk was named after Rastko Nemanjić, Saint Sava, who made the sign of the cross with his cane at the spot, from where a water spring promptly emerged. Local people believe that this water brings good health, happiness and peace, which is the reason why people climb to this peak every August 2nd, when Montenegrins celebrate Ilindan, to bring back some of the water in bottles to their homes. These bottles are kept closed until the following year.
The path to Savin Kuk was constructed at the start of the 20th century, to enable the then-king of Montenegro, King Nikola, to reach the top. It is believed that the water from Savina Voda has healing capabilities, which makes the climb to the peak a significant and recommended activity.
The aerial lift ticket during the summer season costs €8 per person. During the winter, when the spot is a popular ski destination, the ticket costs €12 per person. Ski equipment rental costs between €7 and €10, depending on the skier’s age, whether they are children or adults. At the foot of Savin Kuk, you can find restaurants for skiers to rest in, have lunch, drink wine or rakija, or prepare for their next trip to this peak of the Durmitor mountain.
