The Snake's lake

The Snake's lake

The Snake’s lake or Zminje Lake – The beautiful Zminje Lake is located at the source of the Mlinski Spring. The lake itself is hidden in the depths of a forest, and the profound silence it affords will make you want to just sit and enjoy this earthly paradise. This lake is the most clear-cut example of a Gorsko oko (literally translated as Mountain Eye), overlooking the local mountain peeks. The lake is almost eight meters deep, and is situated at 1520 meters above sea level.

The lake gets its water from two main sources, as well as thanks to snow melting and carrying water from the mountain, which is no miracle, as the lake is located near Durmitor Mountain. The water is translucent and rich in vegetation, which brings the lake its characteristic green color. It is important to note that the path to the lake is very accessible and, as there are no inclines to note, we could say that it is quite easy to cross for both young and old. There are many benches around the lake, which allow visitors to rest and drink the local spring water.

The name of the lake carries an interesting story with it. Literally translated as Snake Lake, legend has it that, during the cold winter months, snakes would gather around the lake to warm up. As snakes died out in the area due to the extreme cold, the river got its name. There is also a legend that tells of the local trees casting shadows over the lake, which makes it seem that the river is covered in snake skin. Whether these legends are true or not, we definitiely recommend you visit the lake.
