Every city is first experienced by its landmarks. Ljubljana boasts a rich history and cuture. From what you can see in the capital of Slovenia, you will be able to deduce what the people of Slovenia used to live like, what their customs are like, and what is passed on from generation to generation. Even though Ljubljana has a lot of landmarks to offer, we will highlight some of the most visited an crucial ones.
When we say Ljubljana, we think of the river Ljubljanica which is sung in Prešeren's song Povodni mož. The Ljubljanica is a river which is 41 km long and flows through the capital of Slovenia. It is a tributary of the Sava and it inflows near Zalog. Its spring is near Vrhnika and the village of Verd, and the main springhead is Močilnik. The Ljubljanica is suitable for tourist boats, but not for some larger ones. We recommend that you sit in a cafe or restaurant along the river Ljubljanica and enjoy its beautiful shores. We suggest you try some liqueur, and a glass of Slovenian wine is always a good choice when you are here.
It is not only Rome that has its famous fountain! One of the most famous fountains is located in Ljubljana as well, and it is the perfect Robba Fountain! The fountain of the three rivers, as it is often called, is made of white marble and looks magnificent. Good photos are definitely taken here. Three Carniolan rivers that are represented on this fountain are Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica. It is the work of Francesco Robba, created in 1751, made in the Rococo style and located in front of the City Hall or the Magistrate.
Another very important landmark for Ljubljana is the Franciscan Church! The Franciscan Church, also called the Church of the Assumption of Mary, is located on Prešeren Square in the center of Ljubljana and is one of the symbols of this city. This building is the most visited in Ljubljana due to its external and internal appearance. It was built sometime between 1646 and 1660, in the early Baroque style, with one nave and two chapels. The main altar inside the church is the work of sculptor Francesco Robba, and the frescoes were done by Mateja Sternen.
Fans of the view of the city from the buildings will find a building ideal for that in Ljubljana, Nebotičnik/Neboder (Skyscraper). A unique experience of the city from a bird's eye view. This tall building made of reinforced concrete is recognizable in Slovenia for its height of 70.35 meters. It is the work of Slovenian architect Vladimir Šubica. It is located in the center of Ljubljana, and it was the tallest building in Yugoslavia and the ninth in Europe at the time it opened in 1993. It is still one of the most important landmarks in Ljubljana with its thirteen floors.
The Celica Hostel or ex military prison in the heart of Ljubljana in Metelkova mesto was transformed into a small hostel which was designed by local artists. The prison and military barracks were emptied during 1991 when JNA left Slovenia. Even though it was a prison, this place is historically more than that. The barracks were built in far 1882, as a Belgium barracks for Austro-Hungarian military. People who were guilty for many crimes lived inside the prison cells, whose stories have lived within the walls for decades and still live today.
