Art is a part of Maribor, and the art gallery tells a story about it. The Maribor art gallery contains over 7,000 works of art by Slovenian artists from the end of the 19th century to the present day. In it you can see sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, multimedia installations, interactive art projects. The art gallery was founded in 1954, and that year Maribor got the first gallery of its kind, the museum gallery of modern art. The museum has 800 m2 of exhibition space. In the former palace from the 19th century and in the former church from the 18th century, there are central exhibition spaces. In addition to representing the main names of Slovenian art, it also follows the events of the international art scene.
This is one of the main museums of modern art in Slovenia. Thanks to him, Maribor became one of the most important art centers in the country. In the museum you will explore visual art and all current topics related to modern art. During the year there are 12 special exhibitions, and a total of about 20 events and exhibitions are organized. The most significant event in the museum is the International Triennial "Ecology and Art", which has been organized since 1980. The education sector within the gallery runs art programs for children and young people.
