Matara is one of the most important cities in the southern Sri Lanka. The economy of the city is mainly based on tea, coconut, fruit and vegetables cultivation and fishing. Matara beach is located right next to the central bus stop in Matara. It really is a nice sandy beach but often not used enough due to its vicinity to the traffic jam. Instead we would recommend that our visitors should take a look at the two beaches Medawatta and Polhena beach, which are located just a few kilometers from Matara. They both represent a true paradise.
Medawatta beach is the beach adored by the surfers as they have the best waves here and surfing training schools and camps. The beach is located just outside Matara and visitors can reach it by tuk tuk. This beach never seems to be too crowded so visitors can thoroughly enjoy the surf and peaceful surroundings. The accommodation in close proximity to this beach is quite affordable.
Polhena beach is also near Matara, only a few kilometers away actually, and visitors can arrive here using tuk tuk. Polhena is considered to be the most romantic beach of Sri Lanka. This is not a big beach but it is pleasant to relax there and the only people you will see there are the locals who come here to enjoy the afternoon dip in the sea. Here one may also find wonderful coral reefs so snorkeling is a must.
