The Modern Art Museum

The Modern Art Museum

The Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Musset) was opened in 1958 on Skeppsholmen island. There you will come across remarkable works of arts of famous 20th century artists. The building was renovated in 1994 following the idea design of the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. It was presented to public in 1998. It has over 130 thousand impressive works of art. The exhibitions are divided in 3 categories: the present, the future, and the new age. The future represents the works from 1940 to 1970, while the new age represents the works from 1900 to 1940.

What is characteristic for this, one of the leading modern art museums in the world, are unusual exhibits, that you might not understand at first. One of those is a scarecrow made of a dead animal, covered in paint, and it represents “The Goat”. There are masterpieces done by the most famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Björn Levin and others. Particularly special part of the museum is the authentic photography library.

In 1993, two paintings by Georges Braque and 6 by Picasso were stolen from the museum. Total losses are estimated of 50 million dollars. It was possible to bring back only three Picasso’s paintings, while the other are still missing. There are a restaurant and a gift shop in the museum, as well as a studio for all artists
