New York City:

The Isamu Noguchi Museum

The Isamu Noguchi Museum

The first aspect of the Noguchi Museum you are going to notice is its unusual exterior design. It is located in the Long Island City section of Queens. It stretches on 2.200m2, it has two floors and a garden with sculptures. It was founded by the Japanese-American sculptor and artist Isamu Noguchi with the aim of exhibiting his works that he considered representative. This is the first museum in America dedicated to an artist with still ongoing career. He renamed his old foundation to the Isamu Noguchi Foundation that later leased the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was one of the most significant sculptors of his time. He was an artist who, in addition to sculptures, also was a landscape architect who designed gardens, scenography, furniture, lighting installations etc. The museum was officially opened in May 1985. The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum aims to preserve, exhibit and acknowledge works done by Isamu Noguchi. The collections consist of sculptures, sketches, furniture designs, architecture models etc.

Today, the museum offers various educational and public programs that give the audience an opportunity to experience the culture that Isamu Noguchi left us. Participants in the programs consider Noguchi’s works from different aspects and thus analyze and research them.
