New York City:

The New Museum

The New Museum

The New Museum of Contemporary Art – yet another fascinating museum, unique for its design and it is located on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker. It has a sharp architectural design - it resembles a stack of boxes of different sizes. The building is unique and very special for New York. It has a dynamic appearance and it attract the attention of tourists and passers-by. Even though it is quite different from other museum buildings, it fits perfectly in its surroundings.

The museum originally opened in a space in the Graduate Center of the then-named New School for Social Research at 65 Fifth Avenue. It was located there until 1983 when it was moved to the Astor Building at in the SoHo neighborhood. The whole relocation investment amounted to $50 million. The building has 7 floors, and it was designed by the Tokyo company Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA and the New York-based firm Gensler. The design has achieved its goal, it is a fine representative of contemporary art.

There are both contemporary and modern pieces of art within the permanent collection, but there are also works done by less known artist. In addition to permanent exhibitions, there are also temporary ones. Given that most of the works are done by less famous artists, the majority of the museum’s visitors are locals. Works by artists from all over the world have been exhibited in the museums – form Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Spain, China, Argentina, Turkey and many others. In 2003, the New Museum formed an affiliation with Rhizome, a leading online platform for global new media art.

In 2008, the museum's new building was named one of the architectural New Seven Wonders of the World by Conde Nast Traveler. The museum has a gallery, a conference room and Resource center that provides access to access to their main web site and digital archive. Furthermore, there you can also get more information regarding exhibitions and the program.  Over 7.500 written documents are in the archive, and you can do research on over 4.000 artists and all those who are somehow connected to the New Museum.
There is small coffee house with snacks on the first floor.
