The Whitney focuses on American art with collections from the 20th and 21st century, with special emphasis on contemporary artists. It has a modern design and it is located in lower Manhattan. It was designed by Renzo Piano, and it was opened in 2015. Construction works lasted 5 years, and the costs amounted to $442 million. It stretches on 1.700m2 and has 8 floors. Within the building, there is a gallery, a library, a theatre, an education center, a study room and two floors with permanent exhibitions. Michelle Obama and Bill de Blasio attended the opening ceremony.
The museum was named after the prominent and wealthy artists that founded the museum in 1930, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. All the finest works of American art are preserved and analyzed in the museum, and the 20th-century collection is a real treasure of this museum. The “Biennial Exhibition” is the main exhibition regarding modern art. This is the first museum in New York dedicated to the works of American artists, and the first museum to exhibitions the works of Nam June Paik in 1982.
