The Christmas Market at Rathhausplatz

The Christmas Market at Rathhausplatz

The Christmas Market at Rathaus Square is a winter magic that lasts. Royal Vienna is magical in every part of the year, but it is especially romantic during New Year holidays. Embellished streets, buildings, palaces, churches give the feeling of peace and serenity, good mood and at the same time the feeling of real New Year euphoria.

For years, a big popularity among New year holiday lovers goes to New Year fairs. One of them is the fair at Rathaus Square. When you arrive, you sense the smell of mulled wine and cinnamon, pastry, hot chocolate and diverse salty and sweety dishes. The Rathaus in the background looks like some palace from a fairytale, and embellished New Year tiny houses enlarge that impression.

The whole part of Rathaus Square is embellished with different decorations, big shining red hearts are on trees, smaller trees are covered with shining lights, and you can see magnificent decorations wherever you look- across the park, the colours such as red, yellow and orange spread, there are spaces for creating the most beautiful New Year photographs, shining wings of angels, and many other creative ideas can be found here. There is an incredible feeling of holidays that spreads here.

On every step, a visitor can taste traditional Austrian dishes, and at some stands even Sacher cake. Everything that is followed by New Year music, great pace and all that beautiful atmosphere. Handmade New Year presents and Christmas decorations are sold at over 150 stands and souvenirs that are a memory of New Year fair in front of the town hall (Rathaus). Here you can watch interactive plays about Jesus, what the youngest audience finds especially interesting. What attracts adults here most are smoked sausages and red mulled wine.

The most beautiful Christmas tree is at this place, along with the famous train Christkindl express that offers rides across Rathaus park. There are two more Christmas markets that are beautiful- one is at St Stephen’s Square and the other one is at Spittelberg. The prices at these markets differ from stand to stand.
