The Black Lake

The Black Lake

The Black Lake is located around 3 kilometers from the town of Žabljak. It is situated on the Durmitor mountain, at a height of 1416 meters above sea level. The lake is a glacial one with a surface area of 515 m2. At the foot of the Međed peak, two small lakes are located, Big and Small Black Lake, which together form a single Black Lake. The longest part of the lake measures 1155 meters.

Black Lake gets its water from the Celina karst spring and the Mlinski Stream. Due to the melting of snow, the water level in the lake can change up to 5 meters. The water temperature of the lake during the summer is usually 4 degrees Celsius colder than air temperature. During winter, the lake sometimes freezes over, and when this happens, you can walk along the ice. it is surrounded by lush evergreen forests, walkways and recreation paths, which all together makes the lake the most popular tourist attraction in the Durmitor area. You can reach the lake from Žabljak on foot, following the 3-kilometer-long path. The path around the lake is 3.5 kilometers long, which makes it perfect for walking and recreation.

The entrance to the portion of the National Park where Black Lake is situated costs €3 per person, and children under the age of 7 enter free of charge.

At the lake itself, the Jezero restaurant offers national delicacies, as well as a chance to warm up by drinking mulled wine and rakija, as the winters in Durmitor tend to be particularly cold. Entrance to Black Lake costs €3 all year round, while parking costs €2
