Miami:

The Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Miami. It is currently used as a contemporary art museum and a central office to different disciplines in the arts in the city. The Freedom Tower design was inspired by the bell tower from the Giralda in Seville. With exciting architecture and abundantly decorated façade, it is one of the most famous historical sites in South Florida. It was designed by George A. Fuller and Schultz & Weaver. Evidence to its importance is the fact that the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and in October 2008 it was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

In the 1960s, the building was used as a base for Cuban refugees from Cuban Revolution, and as a health center for those refugees at the same time. After serving such purpose, i.e. upon the era of refugees ended, the federal government sold the building to private investors in 1974.

In 1997, the building was purchased for 4.1 million dollars by the family of the prominent Cuban-American businessman and anti-Communist Jorge Mas Canosa. The tower was then restored to its original state and converted it into a memorial to the refugees who fled to the United States from Cuba. It housed a museum, library, meeting hall, and the offices of the Cuban American National Foundation.

In 2005, Terra Group father and son, Pedro and David Martin, along with its members purchased the Freedom Tower. This purchase eventually led to the Freedom Tower being donated to Miami-Dade College. As part of the donation agreement, the College was required to create a Cuban exile experience. Today, the tower is used as a museum, cultural center, and an education center. It is home to the Cuban American Museum. It is used as an additional educational resource for teachers, students and general public in South Florida. The historical building looks beautiful during the day, and even more beautiful in the evening when all the city lights are lit.
