The American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest and most significant museums in the world. It was established in 1869 with aims towards research and spreading information regarding cultures, nature and space. Exhibitions in the museum are like a small treasure, they will guide you through the whole planet. It is located in the Roosevelt Park, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and it stretches on 190.000 m2 on 4 levels with various exhibits. Prior to this location, it was located in the Arsenal building, Central Park in the period from 1869 to 1877.  Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the USA was one of the museum’s founders, alongside John David Wolf, Robert Colgate, Benjamin H. Field, D. Jackson Steward and many others.

The idea for the museum was initially proposed by Albert Bickmore, and it had developed for many years, ever since his student days. His proposal was supported by sponsors from New York, his key supporter being the governor of New York, John Hoffman, who on 6 April, 1869 signed a decree officially launching the American Museum of Natural History – that is how Bickmore’s dream came true.
There are 28 buildings in the museum complex with 45 permanent exhibitions. The museum has over 33 million plants, fossils, minerals, human remains, animals etc. It is perfect for family visits because both children and adults will enjoy there. It is an everlasting experience of researching for all ages. There are dinosaur fossils, including the magnificent T-Rex, a huge blue whale, ancient sloths, horse predecessors, as well as bears, elephants, birds, but also ethnological and anthropological exhibitions, different collections from all over the world, a section dedicated to space, amphibian exhibition etc. It will seem there is no end in the museum, but do not give up.

The museum is huge and it will take up a lot of time to see everything. It is an interesting way to learn something new - through multimedia presentations and all kinds of exhibitions you will for sure learn a lot about human evolution. Approximately 5 million people visit the museum annually.
