The Museum of Modern Art - MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) – The idea for the MoMA was proposed in the 1920s when sponsors such as Lillie P. Bliss, Cornelius J. Sullivan and John D. Rockefeller aimed to establish an institution dedicated to modern art. Together with A. Conger Goodyear, Paul Sachs, Frank Crowninshield, they opened the Museum of Modern Art in 1929. The public was elated upon the announcement, and the amazement can still be seen in tourists visiting the museum today.

The Museum of Modern Art was opened on 7 November, 1929, and it was housed in its current location in 1939. The museum building is located downtown Manhattan, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The façade accentuate that it is a modern and contemporary art museum, but it does not reveal what is behind the glass, i.e. a magnificent collection you should not miss on.
The MoMA has a rich archive and a well-supplied library with more than 320.000 books, mainly books on artists, documents and magazines that present more than 90.000 artists. It also has over two million film photographs. The museum is also interactive to a certain extent – it hosts lectures, discussions and special events for parents, teachers, students etc.

One of the important projects done by the museum is a memorandum PS1 with the Contemporary Art Center back in 2000. This partnership enabled more possibilities regarding collections, exhibitions and administration. Today it is known as MoMA PS1.

The museum finished the largest architectural project regarding the expansion of the exhibition and program space in 2006. It was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, and the buildings has almost 60.000m2. The Peggy and David Rockefeller Building on the western portion of the site houses the main exhibition galleries, and The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building provides space for classrooms, auditoriums, teacher training workshops, and the museum's expanded Library and Archives. The museum was officially reopened on 20 November, 2004, with the Cullman building opened in November 2006.

Millions of tourists visit the MoMA every year. In 2013, the record with almost 3 million tourists was set.
