Vienna:

The Capuchin Church

The Capuchin Church

The Capuchin Church is both a church and a convent and it is close to the Hofburg Palace. This Catholic church is of very modest dimensions and simple. Its most famous trait is that it has a royal crypt and it is the place where all members of the Habsburg Royal Family are buried.

The real name of the church is The Saint Mary of the Angels, however, it is more known as the Capuchin Church. Anna of Tyrol, wife of Roman Emperor Matthias Habsburg, gave the church as a gift to the city of Vienna through her will. The church was finished in 1632. The royal crypt is actually an underground mausoleum of the Habsburg dynasty , and there is also the tomb of the friar Mark Aveni. Even 145 members of the Habsburg dynasty were buried in this church, of which there are 12 emperors, 18 empresses, along with the dates with cremated members of the dynasty.

The interior of the church is embellished with the sarcophagus of Emperor Charles VI, the tomb of Franz Joseph I, also. Although it is rather simple, modest and small, this church is very important- after all, the Habsburg dynasty ruled Vienna the longest.
