The Vienna City Hall is incredible during New Year holidays, but it looks incredible even during the rest of the year. This impressive Gothic building is located at Rathaus Square and it was created by the German architect Friedrich Schmidt. It was built in the period between 1872 and 1883.
The City House is a city hall in which over 2000 people work. It takes 14000 square metres, it consists of six floors and two basements with 1575 rooms in total. Its greatest characteristic is the statue of Rathausmann (an iron flag carrier) that is one of the main symbols of Vienna, designed by Alexander Nehr. The statue was given as a gift by a locksmith, and in October 1882, it was attached to the tower. It has 5 towers, of which the middle one is 98m high. The ballroom is on the first floor and it overlooks the interior of the city. It is 71m long and 20m wide. A meeting hall of the City Senate and the Council is located on the first floor.
If you visit the Rathaus, we recommend a visit with a tourist guide. You will see a hall, stairs that lead to the assembly hall, Heraldic room, the Senate city chamber and the Mayor’s reception room. You will see the full picture and experience this building in its genuine spirit. It is really a wonderful feeling to be in front of the Vienna City Hall, especially during holidays when a huge Christmas tree is put and a lot of shining lightbulbs that give a special charm to this place and its architecture.
