Vienna:

Hundertwasser House

Hundertwasser House

The Hundertwasser House in Vienna is a building of an extraordinary appearance due to its façade. It was designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser with the architect Joseph as his co-author.

This work of art today attracts numerous tourists and it really is something that one should visit in Vienna. Its appearance is so recognizable that it is basically impossible not to notice it. It has a very colourful colour palette on it, and as such resembles houses from children’s picture books. An interesting fact is that anyone who lives here can add a pattern and make decorations around their windows according to their imagination. Apart from its recognizable façade, this house attracts attention because of the greenery that spreads over it- over 200 plants embellish the building. This is a piece of art you admire because of its exterior- it isn’t allowed to enter the building. However, there is the Hundertwasser Village that is allowed to visit. In 1990/91, it used to be a tyre shop, however, in the hands of artists, it was converted into a shopping centre with a square, bar and shops in Hundertwasser style.

The Hunderwasser House was made between 1983 and 1985. On the ground floor, it is possible to watch a free film in which Friedensreich Hundertwasser guides you through his house.

This colourful landmark has become one of the main tourist attractions of Vienna located in the Landstrasse district. People who live here are mostly artists, intellectuals, creative souls, just like F. Hundertwasser- maybe that is a coincidence, or maybe it isn’t?The building has become part of the cultural heritage of Austria. On the opening day, the house was visited by 70000 visitors, and the very building project cost around 7 million euros. The building is the property of the city of Vienna.

There is a telephone booth in front of the house which was put there in 1985, imported by Hundertwasser. He thought that back then Austrian booths were very ugly, whereas an English telephone booth’s style was according to his own style, the appearance of the building and the surroundings. The same booth was renewed in 2013.
