Kärntner Straße - the shopping street

Kärntner Straße - the shopping street

One of the most famous and most beautiful trade and pedestrian zones in the heart of Vienna is Karntner Street. It takes the area from Stephen’s Square up to Ring (Karl’s Square). Many cafes, shops, boutiques and a huge tree line of lindens that takes up the greatest part of the street are all there. Gracious Koruška Street makes any type of walk a great pleasure and enjoyment. A long time ago, this street had the name of Strata Carintianorum. In XIX it gained today’s appearance. In that period, many old houses were destroyed in order for this street to be expanded and be comparable to all trade streets of world metropolis.

In this street, there are many shops that sell Mozart souvenirs, pralines and famous Mozart chocolate balls. There is also an ex-building of the department store Steffl 1791 here, where Mozart died. For that reason, you will see many shops in this area that sell things that remind us of Mozart. You will also encounter a shop that sells Swarovski crystals, very impressive and worth your attention.

It is at number 24 on this street, it has three floors and you will be amazed by a big range they have to offer. One of the most significant buildings is Palais Esterhazy, from 1698. Here nowadays there is a very modern and luxurious restaurant. What is also very important is that there is a famous fountain “Donner” nearby.

We also recommend that you walk through side streets, as well, since each of them has something to offer.
