The Economy of Mostar

The economic development of Mostar began during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Large factories were built, such as the aluminum plant, tobacco factory, Neretva hydropower plant, yarn and cotton factory, brown coal mine, etc. Industry employs a large number of workers and Mostar become the economic center of Herzegovina. 

The main contribution to the development of the city was coming from tobacco industry, wine production, textile industry, food and metal industry as well as the wood processing. After the civil was in Bosnia in Herzegovina, numerous companies declared bankrupt or simply decreased thei business volume to minimum, which affected Mostar in a negative way.

The only factory that remained open is the aluminum plant, as one of the largest stae company and the largest Bosnian exporter. Every year, the company breaks records in the number of aluminum alloys produced and it cooperates with companies such as Daimler & Chrysler and PSA. The International Fair of Economy is held in Mostar every year and according to the number of exhibitors and visitors it is certainly the most successful fair in the country. The first fair was held in 1997 and today it consists of several smaller exhibitions: the Economy Fair, the Wine Fair, the Book Fair and the Gastro Days. Mostar is also visited by numerous tourists and the trousim indiustry has great potential in this part of Hercegovina given the fact that Mostar is the city like no other in Europe; It is the easter city with oriental culture in the heart of Europe.
