The most popular sport in Mostar is football. The first football club in Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in Mostar in 1905 - the Croatian football club Zrinjski was founded and it thus became the oldest football club in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Apart from Zrinjski, other clubs followed. The most famous club in Mostar is Velež, founded in 1922. In 1945 during communism, Zrinjski lost its work permit and Velež began to compete and was placed in the First Federal League of Yugoslavia in the 1952/53 season. Velež never won the title, it only ended up in the second place twice.
Velež was the finalist of the Yugoslavian Cup for four times. Velež also won this Cup onlz once in 1981. In 1992 croatians wanted to invest in their club Zrinjski, as this was a matter of price for all Croatians coming from Mostar. In 2005, for the first time in the history of Mostar, Zrinjski won the title of state champion and won the Bosnian Cup in season 2007/2008. In 2013/2014, Zrinjski again won the title of the champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina. City Derby between Zrinjski and Velež is much more then a game as rivalry between the two clubs is likely to be highest when they play agains eachother. Mostar also has numerous football clubs that play in second and third league of Bosnia such as Hnk Branitelj, Bjelopoljac, Buna, Nk Cim.
