It has been restored several times, after fires that the church endured over the centuries.

In the great fire of 1531, when the Nidaros Cathedral burned down, the church was the main temple until the new cathedral was rebuilt. Then the church became a parish.
The oldest preserved part on the building dates from the 12th century. The tower and the western part were built during the 17th and 18th centuries. During the 1700s, it received Baroque decor, and a large part of Baroque and Rococo was removed by editing.

Today, the church is a place for lighting candles, praying, meeting with a cup of tea, but it is often also a shelter for the homeless.
