The Argentinian Park

The Argentinian Park

Argentinian Park is one of the better rated parks on the Tripadvisor and we assure you that that is for a reason. In the time of Yugoslavia, the Argentina Park was called Lenin Park and Ajdovščina Park, and since 1995 it is called Argentina Park. The park is the work of architect Danilo Furst, and it got a beautiful look after the World War II. The goal was to turn the barren land into green areas and to cover the roof of the garage house.

The park is not arranged like all other parks, but it has a history that other parks do not have. The trees in the park are several centuries old, full of chestnuts, maples, tulips…Some trees, such as wild chestnuts and platane, are protected by law as a monument of nature. An ideal place to take a walk and a break from everyday life or urban life. There is a children's playground in it, so the place is suitable for adults and children.

The name it bears today came about in the middle of 1900, when Slovenia and Argentina wanted to improve their relations. So Argentina named one of their streets in Buenos Aires after Slovenia and donated a statue of San Martin. The location for the statue was the then Ajdovščina Park, that is, today's Argentina Park. The public's attitude towards the statue was not what the Argentine authorities expected. The Slovenes didn’t like the fact that the statue of the unknown general would be in Slovenia.

Even Argentina asked for the statue to be returned to their country. The City of Ljubljana has renamed a part of the park "A part of the Argentina Park between Župančičeva Street, Argentina Park and Puharjeva Street has been renamed the Park of the Slovenian Reformation". A sculpture in memory of Slovenian protestants stands near the Evangelical Church since 2010. This park is mostly visited by the locals, and at first glance this is a classic city park in which history is still hidde.
