Saint Nicholas's Cathedral is located in the heart of Ljubljana. This building is the main catholic church, where the Archbishop of Ljubljana serves Mass. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas who is considered to be protector of sailors and fishermen. The cathedral is located on the site of an even older church, built in 1262, which unfortunately burned down in a fire in 1361. The original church was a Romanesque Basilica in style. The newly built church was built in the Gothic style.
The diocese of Ljubljana was established in 1461, and this church has been called the LJUBLJANA CATHEDRAL since then. The same church was completely destroyed in 1701, a the new one (today’s) was built later in baroque style. Roman architect Andrea Poca is responsible for its appearance.
This church was consecrated on May 8, 1707. When Pope John Paul II came to visit Ljubljana, a door with statues of six bishops of Ljubljana was built. The main fresco in the cathedral represents an unusual play of angels, and the cathedral is adorned by a bronze door, the interior decorated with pink and beige marble, and is worth a visit.
A single ticket per person, without a guide, costs 2€
The price of a tour of the cathedral with a group of up to 5 people is 82€, which would be around 20€ per person. The duration of the tour is 1 hour, and it includes a visit to the old part of Ljubljana.
