The Pyramid

When we say picnic spots, the first thing that comes to mind in Maribor is the Piramida picnic spot. It is half an hour away from the City Park, and the height is 386 meters. From this place there is a beautiful view of Maribor. It is a very attractive place and is visited by the local population. A castle used to be located here, which makes it even more attractive. Walking to this picnic area will be an unforgettable experience. Along the way to the hill, you will come across vines. Beautiful nature, and with all that climbing recreation, you can get to know the animal kingdom that inhabits these areas. So there are deer, rabbits, various kinds of birds, foxes, etc. Enjoying nature is an indispensable part of this tour.

Now let's explain how the name Pyramid came about. The castle that was located on the hill was built for the purpose of protection from the Hungarians at the beginning of the 12th century. The castle was called Marchpurg or Marburg which means castle in the marque or border castle. In 1528, the castle burned down, but in the 1560s it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Its existence was not permanent, it was demolished in 1790. All the remains were used to make the stone pyramid after which the hill got its name.

After the demolition, a trench and a well remained. Now, on the site of the moat, a classic chapel stands out, where there is a statue of Mary. Based on the text on the memorial plaque, it is known that the original pyramid was blown away by lightning in 1821, and that Count Henrik Brandis contributed to the construction of the chapel in order to preserve the memory of the castle.
The original name of the hill was "mons castri" and "der Purgperg", however today it is known as the Pyramid and is one of the main tourist attractions of Maribor.
