Stockholm:

The Djurgarden Park

The Djurgarden Park

Djurgården Park is actually a large island in the middle of Stockholm, and the park is the main recreational and amusement area of the Swedish capital. The fact that about 10 million visitors visit the park annually shows how popular it is. A huge part of the park are green spaces with pedestrian lanes next to the water among historical residences of former bourgeoisie and institutional buildings, many of which are considered historical monuments of national interest.

“Djurgården” in Swedish means “animal garden”, and it got the name after the game park of King John III, who used to keep deer, elephants and moos there. During the 17th century and baiting arena was built. After the animal park’s popularity declined, at the end of the 18th century Djurgården began to get the glimpses of a cultural place where the theatre Djurgårdsteatern was opened, and where King Carl XIV’s palace was built. In the 19th century, Djurgården got the first amusement park Gröna Lund (1883), and the sports club Djurgården was founded in this area as well.

In the park there are many cultural sights of Stockholm such as Skansen, the Junibacken Museum, the Gustav Vasa ship, the Rosendal Palace, Prince Eugen’s estate that has become one of the main art museums. In 2013, the legendary band ABBA got its museum on the island as well.

Besides amazing park, there you will meet the culture and history of a city and a nation. We definitely recommend it!
