Miami:

The Coral Castle

The Coral Castle

Coral Castle is also known as Rock Gate. It is a limestone structure created by the Latvian-American eccentric Edward Leedskalnin. Coral Castle is not too far from Miami, and it is at the same time a very interesting and mysterious attraction. The structure comprises numerous large stones, mostly limestone formed from coral, each weighing several tons.

Coral Castle was created in 1920, when Edward’s fiancée, Agnes, from Latvia, rejected him just a day before their wedding. When he came back to the US, Edward got terminally ill from tuberculosis, but he soon healed, as he claimed, with the help of magnets. Since that day, he spent the following 28 years building his Coral Castle, refusing to allow anyone to view him while he worked. Hopeless love inspired him to create these unusual works of art, and everybody who visits this site will acknowledge the veil of mystery and bizarre atmosphere around it. There is a 9-tone limestone gate at the entrance of the museum.
