Near one of the lakes in Central Park there is a small Belvedere Castle built in 1869. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It follows the Gothic and Romanesque styles. ‘Belvedere’ means a ‘beautiful view’ in Italian. Starting in 1919, Belvedere Castle housed the New York Meteorological Observatory. The castle is built upon Vista rock at 40 meters of height. Today, the castle is a tourist attraction with a souvenir shop.
There are free family and group programs, such as getting familiar with bird species and nature that the Park abounds with. In addition to that, you may take history, astrology or classes regarding survival in the wild – it is free of charge. The small lake in front of the castle is actually a fish pond with turtles.
