The Columbus Circle

Columbus Circle is a traffic circle and heavily trafficked intersection, located at the intersection of Eighth Avenue, Broadway, Central Park South and Central Park West. The circle is named after the monument of Christopher Columbus in the center. It was installed in 1892. The is the only place with a Columbus sculpture, commemorating the man who discovered the American continent. Columbus Circle is the traditional municipal zero-mile point from which all official city distances are measured. During the 20th century, this circle was famous as the place where public speakers gave speeches. The Columbus monument, in the middle of the circle, is 23 meters high. It consists of 8-meter high marble statue put on a granite column. This work of art was designed by the Italian creator Gaetano Russo.

Five streets running through the Columbus circle divide this area in 5 parts – western, northern, southern, northeastern and southeastern. The Circle has appeared in many Hollywood movies. Some of them are “It should happen to you”, or “Taxi Driver” starring Robert de Niro in attempt to assassinate the president. Important buildings located near the Circle are:  the Museum of Arts and Design, Trump International Hotel, 6 Columbus, Boutique Hotel, the USS Maine National Monument.
