New York City:

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty is one of New York’s landmarks, internationally recognized statue located on Ellis island, one kilometer away from Manhattan. It is 46.5 meters high and it represents the symbol of friendship between France and the USA that was gifted to the US in 1886. It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and its interior metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower. France gifted the statue to American settlers who fought for independence from the Great Britain, and it was seen as a symbol of support.

Upon arrival in the United States, the Statue of Liberty was the first symbol of America, a symbol of freedom and a new free life. The Statue of Liberty is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main port for the reception of immigrants was on Ellis island – at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, about 22 million immigrants entered the USA through the island.

The Statue of Liberty depicts a female figure named Marianne that represents a cultural symbol in France. It holds a torch in one hand, and under the second hand the American Declaration of Independence is engraved. There is a broken chain under the statue’s legs, representing freedom, or the USA’s independence to be more precise.  Alongside the statue, there is a museum, a gallery, gift shop, and a restaurant (coffee bar) on the island. A ferry ride, access to Ellis island and a visit to the Statue and its museum, i.e. climbing to the top of the Statue, is charged.
