New York City:

The Times Square

The Times Square

Times Square is an important intersection formed by the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and it stretches from 42nd and 47th Streets. Times Square is a must when visiting New York, and it is famous for bright and shiny advertisements. The world famous Broadway Theatre is located nearby. Times Square is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, with 39 million tourists annually. It was named in the beginning of the 20th century when “The New York Times” daily moved to the “One Times Square” building that was located there. It used to be called Longacre Square. In the 70s, Times Square was a place where mostly the homeless gathered. However, after mayor Giuliani’s arrival, New York became a city with significantly lower crime percentages where people could feel safe and secure.

Since 2011, smoking has been forbidden on Times Square. Nowadays, this is the center of entertainment industry. Adverts of many international companies catch your attention, especially during the night time – these lights are what the square is famous for. Street performers, famous red stairs, numerous tourists, New Yorkers in a hurry, the Broadway Theatre, fashion studios, the aroma of roasted chestnuts – all these are symbols of New York. There are musicians, artists, actors, dancers, magicians, cosplayers everywhere, and you can get a picture with them for a $1. The most significant event in Times Square is the New Year's Eve when the ads are turned off, and the clock in the middle of the square counts down the arrival of the upcoming year. This is a true crossroad of the world, place of meetings, good-byes and a place that brings together people of all religions and nationalities.
