Best cities to visit in Tenerife

This is the list of the best cities to visit in Tenerife. They are all mainly located along the long coast of Tenerife. Approximately five million tourists visit Tenerife each year: It is the most visited island in the archipelag and one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain. Our list was made by locals so we are sure you will have fun and get the best out of this trip.

One of the best cities to visit in Tenerfie is the capital city - Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife, a city with a population of 205 thousand people. Until 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital of the Canary Island, but in 1927, this role was forwarded to Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria. Santa Cruz de Tenerife boasts the largest marina in Spain, as well as various architectural styles that make the city beautiful, most notably the building of the Auditorium designed by Santiago Calatrava, who is considered to be one of the most important modern-style architects of the world.

The second place on our list goes to the city of Candelaria. Candelaria is a small town located in the southeast of Tenerife. The town covers an area of 49.18m2 and has a population of roughly 26 thousand people. Candelaria has been one of the island’s religious centers ever since an image of the patron saint of the Canary Islands, The Virgin of Candelaria, was found etched in a rock in the town. Every year, thousands of votaries flock to the town’s basilica, even though the original image of the Virgin was lost in a raging storm during the 19th century.

One of the best cities to visit is also Los Cristianos. Los Cristianos is a small town cituated at the southern shore of Tenerife. It is a very modern town mostly situated along the shore, but in recent time it has seen spreading into the inside of the island as well. The town is a popular tourist place and it has a ferry pier. As opposed to its lively neighbor Las Américas, Los Cristianos is a historical town much older than the tourist boom that happened in the 1970s. For a long time, this town was a peaceful fisherman’s village, a fact easily visible in the town’s old houses and other buildings, built in the typical Canary style.

The next city on out list is Los Gigantes, which means “Giants” in Spanish, is a small sea-front town in Santiago del Teide on the western coast of Tenerife. Its main attraction are the giant stone formations, which the locals call Acantilados de Los Gigantes. These stones reach heights between 500 and 800 meters, and they are what the city was named after. Los GIgantes is a truly magnificent place hidden by mountains, so visitors should be aware of the fact that the air in the town can get very humid and windless during the summer. The beautiful beach of De la Arena, characteristic for its black sand, will offer you something by way of refreshment in the humid days.

The last city on our list of the best cities to visit in Tenerife is  called Buenavista del Norte.Buenavista del Norte is a town located in the northwest of Tenerife. Its streets remind somewhat of Andalusian architecture. Apart from the influence of the Conquistadors, a blend of Portuguese tradition and local Guanchos helped create the unique flair of this small town. The locals have kept their tradition alive, such as the local trades of wood-carving, as well as the manufacturing of reed and hay from the local forest. Buenavista includes the area of the Teno rural park, which is art of the network of protected natural reservations of the Canary Islands.
