The Public Garden - Volksgarten

Volksgarten- Vienna is known for its magnificently beautiful parks and it’s really hard to say which one is the most beautiful one. Because of its beauty, Volksgarten stands out. This is another oasis located in the city centre, between important places- Holdenplatz, the Parliament and the Burg theatre. Volksgarten is a royal garden. This park was made in 1809, when Napoleon Bonaparte attacked Vienna with his army. Old buildings that were on this place were destroyed , so when this happened, a new space was created for Emperor Franz I to decide to build a park of nature. The park was officially opened in 1819.

Firsty created with the purpose of being only a royal park, in 1823 the public was allowed to visit it. Volksgarten means the garden of people. There are wonderful gardens with roses here, fountains and the monuments of culture, as well. The Theseus Temple in the park is built on the basis of Hephaestus’ Greek temple in Athens. This Greek temple in Vienna is used as a space for exhibitions.

There is also a mausoleum dedicated to Queen Elizabeth here, who was loved in Vienna, known under the name of Empress Sisi. The monuments was made of incredibly beautiful white marble.

Another monument in the city is the monument of Franz Grillparzer, who was a famous Austrian dramatist. In the park, there is also a café in whose beautiful surroundings you can have a good coffee or fine wine in peace while birds are singing. That is Café Meierei, that is open during summer months from 09h to 21h.
