Businessman William J. Matheson used this land as a coconut plantation, and his heirs donated the land to the county under a condition it was turned into a park, which was done soon after. It was named after the commissioner at the time, Charles Crandon. How different from other parks the Crandon is says the fact that it also has a zoo – it all started in 1948 when only a few animals were purchased. However, the zoo grew over years, and today it is home to more than a thousand animals.
