Skadar Lake:

The Fort Lesendro

The Fort Lesendro

Lesendro Fortress is located on the island of the same name, which is located a few hundred meters from Vranjina. About 40 years ago, this island was connected to the mainland by a main road. The saying "burn like a bishop for Lesendra" is related to this island, which describes the anger and sadness that Petar II Petrović Njegoš had when he lost this place to the Turks, and it was his favorite island of Skadar Lake. The island of Vranjina is mentioned even in the XII. Century, it is 2 kilometers long and about 1 kilometer wide.

On the island is the monastery of St. Nicholas from the XIII. century. Wars between the Montenegrin and Turkish armies were often fought around this and the other two islands. Grmožur Island is a small stone island with the remains of a fortress, known as the Montenegrin Alcatraz. No one allegedly ever escaped from this prison on the island, and during the reign of King Nikola, this fortress served as a prison. Today, Grmožur is a place where pelicans gather every day and a place that is visited during a cruise on the lake.
